About

Workington Hall, sometimes called Curwen Hall, is a ruined building on the Northeast outskirts of the town of Workington in Cumbria. It is a Grade I listed building.

Built around a pele tower dating from 1362, expanded into a fortified tower house c.1404 by the Curwen family, Lords of the Manor of Workington. On 16 May 1568, Mary Queen of Scots landed at Workington after fleeing Scotland and was sheltered here, writing her famous letter to Elizabeth I. The hall fell into ruin after the Curwen line ended. Grade I listed, now maintained as a public park.
