About
Founded around 1190 by Lochlann, Lord of Galloway and Constable of Scotland, as a Cistercian monastery known as Vallis Lucis (Valley of Light). Daughter house of Dundrennan Abbey. Fell into disuse after the Scottish Reformation in 1560. The chapter house is particularly well preserved with its original tiled floor. Managed by Historic Environment Scotland.
