About

The South Stack Lighthouse is built on the summit of a small island off the north-west coast of Holy Island, Anglesey, Wales. It was built in 1809 to warn ships of the dangerous rocks below.

Built in 1809 by Trinity House to warn ships navigating the treacherous waters around Holy Island, Anglesey. The original oil lamp was replaced by electric light in 1938 and the lighthouse was automated in 1984. Accessed via a dramatic descent of approximately 400 steps down the cliff and across a bridge to the tiny island. The surrounding RSPB reserve is a major seabird colony, home to puffins, guillemots, razorbills, and choughs. An Ellin's Tower visitor centre overlooks the colony.
