About

Cockermouth Castle is in the town of Cockermouth in Cumbria on a site by the junction of the Rivers Cocker and Derwent. It is a Grade I listed building and a scheduled monument.

First built by the Normans in 1134, some stone sourced from the Roman site of Derventio at Papcastle. Significant additions in the 13th and 14th centuries. Played a role in the Wars of the Roses. Badly damaged during the Civil War. Held by the Percy Earls of Northumberland from the 15th to 17th centuries, then passed to the Wyndham family who still own it. Grade I listed.
